12:18PM - Fluoride Lowers IQ, Studies Show

New York – August 15, 2008 - Dr. Vyvyan Howard, a prominent fetal toxicologist said in a recent Canadian TV interview that current brain/fluoride research convinces him that we should stop water fluoridation.

Dr. Howard, President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment and Senior Lecturer, Developmental Toxico-Pathology, University of Liverpool, England, made presentations at three Toronto Canada meetings of the International Society of Fluoride Research, Fluoride Action Network and the Citizens for a Safe Environment.

Studies done in several countries show that children’s IQ are likely to be lower in high natural water fluoride areas, said Howard. These studies are plausible because fluoride is known to affect the thyroid hormone which affects intelligence and fluoride is also a neurotoxicant, said Howard. Such studies have not been conducted in countries that artificially fluoridate the water such as the US, UK and Canada, but should be, he said.

Howard’s assessments came before publication of “Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research by Tang et al concluding “A qualitative review of the studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ." (e-published ahead of print 8/10/08)

"This new brain research together with the NRC's evidence of fluoride's thyroid and bone damage and the CDC's recommendation against use of fluoridated water in infant formula as well as the National Kidney Foundation's withdrawal of their fluoridation support makes a strong case for ending this 60-year-old fluoridation experiment." says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc
Fluoride, added to water supplies ostensibly to prevent tooth decay, is also in virtually all US non-organic foods and beverages from pesticide residues and processing with fluoridated water.

“There have now been over 40 animal studies which show that fluoride can damage the brain, and no less than 18 studies which show that fluoride lowers IQ in children, and only 2 that don't,” says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network (FAN).

In 2006, the U.S. National Research Council’s (NRC) expert fluoride panel reviewed recent fluoride toxicology and concluded, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.”

Michael Connett, Project Director for the Fluoride Action Network co-authored a poster presentation at the International Association of Dental Research entitled, “Fluoride and its effect on human intelligence.” which identified 20 ecological studies that purport an association between high fluoride exposure and decreased human intelligence.

"The weight of evidence that's on the table now says that, on a precautionary basis, we should stop this practice (fluoridation)," said Dr. Howard.

FAN is now working on getting an additional 7 Chinese studies published for the first time in English-language journals by the end of the year. These additional studies include two studies showing that fluoride can pass the placenta and damage the brain of the fetus, and 5 more studies finding a reduction in IQ among children exposed to excess fluoride.

“The Canadian Dental Association says there is no evidence to support the claims that fluoride in drinking water can lead to lower IQs,” reported the Lethbridge Herald

Here’s the evidence: http://www.FluorideAlert.org/brain

The President of the Ontario Dental Association further displayed ignorance of current fluoride research, apparently widespread in the dental community, when he insisted in the CTV broadcast that fluoride incorporates into children's developing teeth to prevent decay. That theory was discarded long ago in favor of science which shows fluoride gets into tooth enamel by topical means alone.

A study by Yoder concluded, "The majority of dental professionals surveyed were unaware of the current understanding of fluoride's predominant posteruptive mode of action."

"No child is, or ever was, fluoride deficient. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control tells us that 1/3 of U.S school children are fluoride-overdosed causing dental fluorosis - white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth. It's time to stop fluoridation," says Beeber.
After 60 years of water fluoridation, the CDC reports that 51% of 6 - 11 year-olds have cavities and 40% of 6 - 11 year-olds have fluorosis

8:33AM - Kidney Foundation Drops Fluoridation Support

Fluoride may damage bones of kidney patients

New York – June 9, 2008 – The National Kidney Foundation withdrew its support of water fluoridation citing the 2006 National Research Council (NRC) report indicating that kidney patients are more susceptible to fluoride’s bone and teeth-damaging effects.

The kidney-impaired retain more fluoride and risk skeletal fluorosis (an arthritic-type bone disease), fractures and severe enamel fluorosis, which may increase the risk of dental decay, reports the NRC.

Fluoride is added to US water supplies ostensibly to reduce tooth decay. Fluoride is also in foods, beverages, (1) drugs and dental products.

The National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) (2) former fluoridation position statement also carried surprising cautions. The NKF advised monitoring children’s fluoride intake along with patients with chronic kidney impairment, those with excessive fluoride intake, and those with prolonged disease. But NKF now admits, “exposure from food and beverages is difficult to monitor, since FDA food labels do not quantify fluoride content.”

The NKF’s April 15, 2008 statement goes further: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.”

“More than 20 million Americans have CKD, and most don’t even know it. More than 20 million others are at increased risk for developing CKD,” NKF reports.

“There is consistent evidence that impairment of kidney function results in changes to the way in which fluoride is metabolized and eliminated from the body, resulting in an increased burden of fluoride,” concludes Kidney Health Australia. (3) in a paper NKF recommends reading (4)

NKF’s fluoridation support was dropped when a lawyer, (5) an academic dentist and public health professional, Daniel Stockin, (6) alerted it to NRC’s findings.

“An easy way to reduce the uncontrolled flow of fluoride into our bodies is to stop water fluoridation,” says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. “But it takes political will to reject fluoridation.”

The American and Louisiana Dental Associations (7,8) erroneously claim the National Kidney Foundation supports fluoridation. However, even the ADA reports (9) that “decreased fluoride removal may occur among persons with severely impaired kidney function who may not be on kidney dialysis.”

On June 20, it was reported that the ADA was forced to finally drop the NKF as a fluoridation supporter

Chronic kidney disease is a growing health problem in the United States occurring more often in African-American populations, says the Centers for Disease Control. (10)

10:31AM - Fluoride May Damage the Brain, New Report Says

New York – February 26, 2008 -- "It is not clear that the benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water outweigh risks of neurodevelopment or other effects such as dental fluorosis," according to an Institute for Children's Environmental Health report. (1)

Fluoride chemicals are added to 2/3 of U.S. public water supplies ostensibly to reduce tooth decay. Fluoride is found in dental products, supplements and virtually all foods and beverages (2).

"Excessive fluoride ingestion is known to lower thyroid hormone levels, which is particularly critical for women with subclinical hypothyroidism; decreased maternal thyroid levels adversely affect fetal neurodevelopment," reports a prestigious committee of scientists and health professionals in a “Scientific Consensus Statement on Environmental Agents Associated with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.”

Studies they reviewed and others link fluoride to brain abnormalities and/or IQ deficits. (3)

"The question is what level of exposure results in harmful effects to children. The primary concern is that multiple routes of exposure, from drinking water, food and dental care products, may result in a high enough cumulative exposure to fluoride to cause developmental effects," they write.

"Given the serious consequences of LDDs [learning and developmental disabilities], a precautionary approach is warranted to protect the most vulnerable of our society," the authors caution.

"It's time to stop water fluoridation," says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. “With many neurological diseases, such as autism and ADD, afflicting too many American children, fluoride's dubious promises of less cavities no longer outweigh fluoride's serious health risks," says Beeber.

The National Research Council reviewed fluoride toxicology evidence and reported in March 2006 that studies linking fluoride to lowered IQ are plausible.(3a)

"The real dental dilemma facing American children today is their inability to get dental care," says Beeber. “Eighty-percent of dentists refuse Medicaid patients (4) and 108 million Americans don’t have dental insurance (5),” says Beeber.

Studies show that when fluoridation ends, cavities actually go down. (6)

Please sign the petition urging Congress to end fluoridation and hold hearings about why federal officials continue to promote water fluoridation in the face of growing scientific evidence of harm at http://www.FluorideAlert.org/Congress .

Dr. Phyllis Mullenix was the first U.S. scientist to find evidence that fluoride damages the brain. She published her study in a respected peer-reviewed scientific journal (7) and then was fired because she wouldn’t squelch it.(8)

5:03PM - End Fluoridation, say 600 Physicians, Dentists, Scientists, and Environmentalists

In a statement released August 9, 2007, over 600 dentists, physicians, scientists and environmentalists urge Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted. They cite new scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. (http://www.fluorideaction.org/statement.august.2007.html)

Signers include a Nobel Prize winner, three members of the prestigious 2006 National Research Council (NRC) panel that reported on fluoride’s toxicology, two officers in the Union representing professionals at EPA headquarters, the President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, and hundreds of medical, dental, academic, scientific and environmental professionals, worldwide.

Signer Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine, says, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director of the Fluoride Action Network (FAN), announced that an Online Action Petition to Congress in support of the Professionals' Statement will soon be available at FAN's web site, www.fluorideaction.org.

“The NRC report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks," says Connett. "Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm in the NRC report,” he added.

An Assistant NY State Attorney General calls the report “the most up-to-date expert authority on the health effects of fluoride exposure.”

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.
-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.
-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.
-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.
-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.
-- The silicofluoride chemicals used for fluoridation are contaminated industrial waste and have never been FDA- approved for human ingestion.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a DC watchdog, revealed that a Harvard professor concealed the fluoridation/bone cancer connection for three years. EWG President Ken Cook states, “It is time for the US to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it's as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”

10:25AM - CDC: Beware Fluoride !!

New York -- January 19, 2007 -- Without fanfare or public announcement, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) posted a new fluoride caution on their website - avoid mixing fluoridated water into concentrated infant formula to prevent discoloring babies’ new teeth. (1)

There is no dispute that too much fluoride causes dental fluorosis - white spotted, yellow or brown and sometimes pitted enamel. The CDC now admits that babies can ingest too much fluoride when fluoridated water is mixed into their concentrated infant formula and foods. Fluoride is added to 2/3 of public water supplies based on a disproved theory that fluoride ingestion prevents cavities.

"Where’s the media alert so that the parents, caregivers, healthcare workers and legislators know about this," asks lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc.(NYSCOF).

A New Hampshire newspaper reports the federal Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program still encourages mothers to mix formula with fluoridated water. (2)

“The CDC leaves it up to groups like ours to share the bad fluoride news,” says Beeber, “And then they will probably criticize us for doing so as they have in the past.” (2a)

This is what the CDC’s website says (1):

"It now appears that the amount of the fluoride contained in the water used for mixing infant formula may influence a child’s risk for developing enamel fluorosis, particularly if the child’s sole source of nutrition is from reconstituted infant formula."

“If tap water is fluoridated or has substantial natural fluoride (0.7 mg/L or higher), a parent may consider using a low-fluoride alternative water source. Bottled water known to be low in fluoride is labeled as purified, deionized, demineralized, distilled, or prepared by reverse osmosis.”

“Using only water with low fluoride levels to mix formula will not eliminate the risk of enamel fluorosis…Other factors that contribute to developing fluorosis include swallowing of toothpaste and use of dietary supplements that include fluoride (tablets or drops).”

The CDC reports that, “formula itself has low amounts of fluoride,” [and] “when infant formula concentrate is mixed with fluoridated water and used as the primary source of nutrition, it may introduce fluoride at levels above the amount recommended to minimize the risk for fluorosis.”

What is recommended?

According to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) (3), to avoid moderate fluorosis (yellow or brown teeth), the adequate daily intake of fluoride, from all sources, should not exceed:

-- 0.01 mg/day for 0 – 6-month-olds
-- 0.5 mg/day for 7 through 12 months
-- 0.7 mg/day for 1 – 3-year-olds

Babies, under one year, consume over their adequate intake from the water supply alone at the so-called optimal concentrations (0.7 - 1.2 mg/L), according to the March 2006 NAS’ National Research Council (NRC) fluoride report (4).

The CDC reports, “one-third (33%) of children aged 12 to 15 years in the United States have very mild to mild forms of this condition.” However, the CDC omits that about 4% have moderate or severe fluorosis, according to the same reference. And up to ½ of all schoolchildren have fluorosis when the “questionable” category is included. (5)

The American Dental Association's Fluoridation Facts describes questionable fluorosis as "A few white specks or white spots." (6)

The CDC admits that “More cosmetically objectionable forms of this condition can occur when young children consume excess fluoride from all sources during critical periods of tooth development [up to age 8],”

Also alarming is that bottled water with added fluoride is now sold with the now-contraindicated instructions to mix into infant formula.(7)

Also little publicized is that the NRC report reveals that some people risk thyroid dysfunction and bone damage from drinking even low levels of fluoride; and studies linking fluoride to cancer and lowered IQ are plausible.

Few know that too much fluoride can actually decay teeth.(7a) And that the most widely used fluoridation chemicals, silicofluorides, are linked to higher rates of tooth decay.(7b)

“Parents also need to be taught the fluoride content of foods in easy-to-understand language, so it’s possible to tally daily fluoride intake and to be taught fluoride’s adverse health and dental effects,” says Beeber.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has compiled fluoride content of foods. (8)

NYSCOF warned the public about a research review published in 2000 showing infant formula mixed with fluoridated water leads to fluorosis.(2a) Many published studies link infant formula to fluorosis.(9)

A Tennessee legislator who is also a medical doctor asked all water departments in Tennessee to shut off the fluoride because of health concerns.(10) In Oregon, a fluoridation bill is stalled by a doctor and nurse in the legislature citing health concerns.(11)

7:07AM - Dental Health

New York - December 2006 -- The American Dental Association (ADA) warned their members, but not the public, that fluoridated water must not be mixed into concentrated formula or foods intended for babies one year and younger, in a November 9th ADA e-mail alert.(1) The ADA joins the Food and Drug Administration in recommending only non-fluoridated water be used for reconstituting concentrated infant formulas.(1a)

“Who will alert parents and provide fluoride-free bottled water to low-income families,” asks lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. (NYSCOF). "And how much fluoride is too much."

A physician who is also a Tennessee State Legislator sent letters to 221 Tennessee Water Departments urging they stop fluoridation. (1e) The Minnesota Dental Association (1f) and the Vermont Department of Health (1g) sent out a news releases advising against using fluoridated water for preparing infant foods.

Two-thirds of U.S. public water suppliers add fluoride chemicals, based on a disproved theory that fluoride ingestion prevents cavities. And, bottled water with added fluoride is now sold with specific instructions to mix into infant formula.(2)

Ready to feed U.S. milk-based formulas already contain from 0.04 to 0.55 milligrams of fluoride per liter (mg/L) of formula. Soy-based formulas show a range of 0.04 to 0.47 mg/L fluoride (1b). Breastmilk contains a low 0.005-0.01 mg/L fluoride (1c) And breastfed babies are less likely to get tooth decay. (1d)

The ADA reports, “…infants could receive a greater than optimal amount of fluoride through liquid concentrate or powdered baby formula that has been mixed with water containing fluoride during a time that their developing teeth may be susceptible to enamel fluorosis.”(3) The ADA recommends using fluoride-free water.

Enamel or dental fluorosis is white spotting, yellow, brown and/or pitted permanent teeth. Pictures: http://www.fluoridealert.org/dental-fluorosis.htm Dental fluorosis is the outward sign of fluoride toxcity. Some studies indicate that bone damage is more common in children with dental fluorosis. (3a)

NYSCOF news releases in 2000 and 2004 (4,5) cited studies linking fluorosis to infant foods mixed with fluoridated water. Scientific evidence here: http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/infant/

Some scientists also tried in vain to get the word out sooner as described in “Suppression by Medical Journals of a Warning about Overdosing Formula-Fed Infants with Fluoride,” published in 1997 in the Journal Accountability in Research.(10)

It took until 2006 for the ADA’s alert, following the Food and Drug Administration’s October disapproval of fluoridated bottled water marketed to babies,(6) and after the recent National Research Council’s (NRC) fluoride report indicating babies are fluoride overdosed from “optimally” fluoridated water supplies.(7)

“The ADA claims the NRC report didn’t question the safety of fluoridation(8) but it did, as the ADA now admits,” says Beeber.

“The NRC also revealed fluoridation’s adverse effects to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others,” says Beeber.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control reports that modern science shows that fluoride absorbs into enamel topically.(9) However, adverse effects occur upon ingestion. Further, the CDC admits enamel fluoride concentration is not inversely related to cavities.

The Environmental Protection Agency is required to consider the most vulnerable populations when setting allowable water fluoride levels. To protect babies, allowable water fluoride levels must be near zero.

The Environmental Working Group analyzed government data in March 2006 and found that babies are over-exposed to fluoride in most major U.S. cities.(11)
“This should end water fluoridation,” says Beeber. “Fluoridation is a failed concept that must be abandoned before more Americans are harmed,” says Beeber.

6:23AM - Fluoride Linked to Arthritis

New York – October 12, 2006 -- A 52-year-old American (New York) man’s arthritic-like joint pain and immobility went away after he stopped brushing his teeth with fluoridated toothpaste, according to a new study in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research(1).

There’s no scientific dispute that large fluoride doses cause crippling skeletal fluorosis over time. (See. http://www.nalgonda.org) But, “less well-known causes of chronic fluoride toxicity include fluoride supplements, certain teas and wine and some toothpastes,” report researchers Kurland, et al.(1)

Skeletal fluorosis often results in abnormal bone hardening and thickening (osteosclerosis) with painful and impaired neck and spine mobility, spine curvature, and/or painful lower extremities ultimately causing crippling and incapacitation, report the researchers.

“Fluoride at any level accumulates in the body,” says Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. “So even water fluoridation will cause arthritic-like symptoms in susceptible individuals which is compounded by U.S. physicians’and dentists' lack of training to diagnose fluoride toxicity.”

In this case, the only obvious fluoride exposure was toothpaste. The patient drank no fluoridated water, tea or wine; had no occupational fluoride exposure; did not chew tobacco, inhale snuff, cook with Teflon pots, use fluoridated mouthwash or get fluoride treatments at twice-yearly dentist visits. But he brushed before and after all meals (minimum 6 times daily) with fluoridated toothpaste.

Fluoride was elevated in his serum, urine and iliac crest (bone), the researchers report.

Within 8 months of eliminating all obvious fluoride sources, the patient’s urinary and blood fluoride levels dropped and bone function markers showed clear cut improvement, the researchers report.

“By approximately two years after diagnosis and apparent elimination of excess fluoride exposure, the patient had complete resolution of his neck immobility and no longer required analgesics,” the researchers write.

Roos, et al. documents a woman whose painful swollen fingers healed after she ceased eating fluoridated toothpaste.(2)

Whyte, et al. report a woman’s fluoride-caused debilitating joint pains disappeared when her two-gallon-a-day iced tea habit stopped.(3)

Eichmiller, et al. report a patient’s leg and joint pains from a dentist-prescribed high-concentration fluoride product.(4)

“We know US schoolchildren are fluoride-overdosed(5). What’s it doing to their bones?” asks Beeber.

Osteoarthritis is linked to water fluoride in a Turkish study.(6)

6:58PM - Fluoride Harmful to Health - even low levels

NEW YORK - Research from India shows that fluoride can make people
sick; but improved diet and complete fluoride withdrawal can relieve
symptoms, according to "Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry."(a)

Fluoride's harmful health effects, except to teeth, are rarely
studied in the U.S. and, in fact, are often discouraged (b). Also never
studied, incredibly, are the most widely-used artificial fluoride
chemicals Americans drink daily (c) - silicofluorides, derived from
fertilizers, purposely added to water supplies, at about 1 milligram
fluoride per quart of water, in an attempt to reduce tooth decay.

In areas of India, where food and water are naturally
fluoride-abundant, severe fluoride toxicity is common and manifests as
debilitating and disfiguring diseases( d). Well-known is that fluoride
excess irreversibly cripples bones and crumbles teeth (fluorosis).

Lesser-known are early fluorosis warning signs, or soft tissue
toxicity, whose manifestations and resulting clinical complaints are
reversible with a diet adequate in calcium, vitamins C, E, other
antioxidants and withdrawal of all fluoride sources (the intervention),
report researchers Madhu Bhatnager and Professor (Dr.) A.K. Susheela,
the CEO and Director of India's Fluorosis Research and Rural
Development Foundation.

Dr. Susheela researches fluoride extensively
(http://education.vsnl.com/fluorosis/publication.html). In this study,
Susheela and Bhatnager write: "It is now an established fact that
fluoride ingestion over a period of time can affect the structure and
function of cells, tissues, organs and systems resulting in a variety
of clinical manifestations. (For example:)

1) aches and pain in the joints, i.e. neck, back, hip, shoulder and
knee without visible signs of fluid accumulation

2) non-ulcer dyspepsia such as nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach,
bloated feeling or gas formation in the stomach, constipation followed
by diarrhea

3) polyuria (frequent urination) and polydipsia (excessive thirst)

4) muscle weakness, fatigue, anemia with low hemoglobin level

5) complaints of repeated abortions/still birth

6) complaints of male infertility with abnormality in sperm morphology,
oligospermia (spermatozoa deficiency in the semen), azoospermia
(spermatozoa absence in the semen) and low testosterone levels."

Susheela and Bhatnager recommend physicians consider fluoride toxicity
for the above-listed patient complaints and/or any loss of shine or
discoloration in the patient's front row of teeth, which may be due
to dental fluorosis.

"Americans are unaware that their arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome
or other symptoms may be fluoride-related," says attorney Paul
Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation.
"This information should be heeded by physicians and members of the
medical and scientific communities. Dr. Susheela is a world authority
on the health effects of fluoride to the human body," says Beeber.

"Pediatricians need to be educated about fluorosis. Perhaps water
fluoridation and indiscriminate promotion of fluoridated dental
products in the name of prevention of dental caries (cavities) need to
be reviewed," writes Susheela and Bhatnager To arrive at a definitive
fluorosis diagnosis, Susheela and Bhatnager:

(1) measure fluoride levels in drinking water, blood (serum), and
urine. Twenty-four hour urine is ideal. Samples are collected in
plastic, not glass, containers because fluoride reacts with silica in
glass resulting in unreliable data.

(2) take radiographs of the region or joint where the patient had
complaints such as pain and stiffness

(3) take forearm X-rays to look for interosseous membrane
calcification. The forearm X-ray is essential for diagnosis of
fluorosis at early stages and to distinguish fluorosis from other
orthopedic conditions. "This is an important message as forearm X-ray
is only requested for diagnosing fluorosis. In patients with fluorosis
and osteomalacia, increases in bone mass and bone density may not
appear, but ligaments would reveal calcification." they write.

"U.S. studies show American children are fluoride saturated, ruining
their teeth with dental fluorosis; yet cavity rates are rising," says
Beeber. "These children should be studied for fluoride's other
adverse health effects and correlated to essential nutrient consumption
and cavities."

If I drink and cook with bottled water will I avoid fluoride? NO

In the U.S., it's virtually impossible to live a fluoride-free life.
Fluoride is inhaled via ocean mist and steam from showers, baths,
humidifiers and air pollution. Mechanically deboned meats (e.g. chicken
baby foods, chicken nuggets) can contain high levels of fluoride.
Fluoride has an affinity for both teeth and bones. Fluoridated chicken
bone dust gets into the finished product.

Vegetables and fruits may bear fluoride-containing pesticide residues.
Some juices made with grapes, for example, with more surface area, are
very high in fluoride.

Most foods and beverages baked, canned, processed, etc., in fluoridated
US cities will contain fluoride not listed on the label. Are you
cooking with bottled water (pasta and rice, especially absorb lots of
water) and what does your favorite restaurant cook with?

Fluoridated dental products, both over the counter and in the dentist
office, are a billion dollar industry which financially supports
organized dentistry to some extent.

Sulfuryl fluoride replaced methyl bromide as a food fumigant and
pesticide. The EPA now allows fluoride residues on foods that are at
levels even your dentists would frown upon.

How Much Is Too Much?

To avoid dental fluorosis, according to the National Academy of Science
(NAS), fluoride from all sources should total less than 0.01 milligram
for infants up to 6 months old. This is hard to accomplish since many
baby foods contain more fluoride than that.

For example, fluoride concentrations in infant formulas measure 0.01 to
0.75 mg/L when distilled water was used in preparation; from 0.02 to
1.37 mg/L when bottled mineral water was used; and from 0.91 to 1.55
mg/L for concentrated formulas prepared using fluoridated tap water(g).
Soy formulas had the highest fluoride content. By comparison,
breastmilk contains about .007 mg/L fluoride.

The NAS says over 0.5 mg fluoride daily from all sources for babies
from 6 - 12 months puts babies at risk for dental fluorosis. However, a
single serving (71 g or 2.5 ounces) of mechanically separated pureed
chicken baby food can contain 0.6 mg fluoride(e).

The NAS says over 0.7 mg for children from 1 to 3 years old may create
the mottled teeth indicative of dental fluorosis. However, some milk
measures .72 mg/L fluoride(f)

The NAS says that over 1 mg fluoride daily for children from 4 to 8
years old may doom them to the white spots or yellowing too much
fluoride delivers. Fruit loops have been measured to contain 2.1 mg/L
fluoride(f). And fluoridated tap water delivers about 1 mg/L fluoride.

Researchers calculate children's fluoride intake between 6 and 9 months
is significantly associated with the development of fluorosis of baby
teeth (h). And, unless fluoride sources are cut back, Fluorosis on
primary teeth probably leads to fluorosis in permanent teeth (i).

6:54PM - Excess Fluoride Decays Teeth

New York - Cavities rise significantly with increasing fluoride content of the drinking water, report Wondwossen and colleagues in the October 2004 dental journal, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology.

Of 306 12- to 15-year-old children born and raised in Ethiopian villages with either moderate or high amounts of natural fluoride in their water supplies, 151 had both cavities and fluorosis (fluoride discolored or damaged teeth), many in the same teeth. Only six, from the moderate-fluoride area, had cavities alone.

The moderately fluoridated water supplies contained:

0.4 – 1.4 milligram fluoride per liter of water (mg/L) in 1982 to 1983

0.2 – 1.6 mg/L in 1984 – 1988

0.5 – 1.9 mg/L in 1989 – 1993

0.3 – 2.2 mg/L in 1997

The higher fluoridated water supplies contained from 9 to 14 mg/L over the same time span.

The study was conducted in 1997.

Cavities developed in 45% and 62% of adolescents in moderately and highly fluoridated areas with an average of 1.2 and 1.8 decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth, respectively.

In the U.S., fluoride chemicals get added to water supplies to reach approximately 1 mg/L or 1 part per million. But fluoride content of foods (2), beverages, medicines, dental products and air pollution increase daily fluoride intake to an unknown quantity. This means total fluoride intake can push children into the fluoride danger zone. This may be why many fluoridated U.S. cities face cavity crises today. (3)

Dentist and researcher Hardy Limeback, Head of the Preventive Dentistry Department at the University of Toronto says, “These low water fluoride exposures are typical of what U.S. children experience. The evidence is piling up that our kids can be harmed rather than helped if their fluoride exposure is excessive.”

Lawyer Paul Beeber, President of the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation says, “Money is wasted on fluoridation schemes. And, as this study shows, fluoridation can actually cause the disease it promises to prevent. No one knows their children’s total fluoride intake. It remains a mystery number until teeth grow in white spotted, yellow, brown or pitted from too much fluoride.”

Regardless of water fluoride levels, Wondwossen and colleagues report cavity prevalence increased consistently with increasing severity of dental fluorosis in the second molars, first molars and canines.

“…the present findings are consistent with previous studies from Africa,” Wondwossen and colleagues write. “This strongly indicates that, within the levels of moderate and high fluoride concentrations, dental caries experience in the permanent dentition increases significantly with increasing fluoride content of the drinking water,” the authors write.

“Two possible explanations may be offered: First, in more severe forms of dental fluorosis, posteruptive changes lead to the loss of outer enamel or formation of pits in teeth. Plaque and food debris may be retained in these areas, contributing to an increase susceptibility to caries. Secondly, because of the presence of subsurface hypo-mineralization (not enough calcium, phosphates and/or other minerals) , teeth with severe forms of diffuse opacities may be inherently at risk of caries,” the authors write

“Wondwossen concludes, “Thus a positive relationship between dental caries and dental fluorosis was observed across various tooth types in both areas.”

6:47PM - Osteoarthritis Linked to Fluoride

New York - Naturally fluoridated water is linked to knee osteoarthritis at levels lower than expected (1) and in amounts many Americans consume daily, according to a study published in "Rheumatology International."

At high doses, fluoride, a well-known tooth and bone seeking element, undeniably damages bones and reportedly can cause arthritis(2a). However, this study, "Endemic fluorosis in Turkish patients: relationship with knee osteoarthritis," correlates knee osteoarthritis to fluoride at levels, 1.9 - 3.6 milligrams per liter (mg/L), that many Americans ingest daily via food, air, water, medicines and dental products.

Fluoride's maximum contaminant level, 4 mg/L, is set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for public water supplies, to prevent bone disease, including pain and tenderness of the bones(3).

Neither a nutrient nor essential to health, fluoride gets into tap water through natural rock erosion, from fertilizer runoff, or when purposely added to reduce tooth decay.

However, researchers Savas et al., found arthritis symptoms in patients drinking water fluoride levels averaging only 2.7 mg/L.

"Unknowingly, Americans inhale or consume between 1.6 - 6.6 mg fluoride a day(4) from varying sources, as obscure as ocean mist, and as common as french fries and cola," says lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. "Little do they know their fluoridated tap water and food supply could be causing their arthritic ailments," says Beeber.

One third of American adults suffer with arthritis(5). "It's curious that Hawaii, the least fluoridated state (9%), in mostly fluoridated U.S., also has the least arthritic adults. It is imperative that the government study the relationship between arthritis and ingested fluoride," says Beeber

Organized dentistry, with little toxicology training, decided that about one milligram daily fluoride is "optimal" for reducing tooth decay - a level they admit has never been scientifically determined(6). But according to UNICEF, "A single 'optimal' level for daily intake cannot be agreed upon because the nutritional status of individuals, which varies greatly, influences the rate at which fluoride is absorbed by the body. A diet poor in calcium for example, increases the body's retention of fluoride." (7)

Osteoarthritis is a chronic joint disorder characterized by degeneration of joint cartilage and adjacent bone that can cause joint pain and stiffness.(8)

In this study, an endemic fluorosis group was compared to a control group. "The severity of osteoarthritis was greater in patients with endemic fluorosis than controls, both clinically and radiologically," Savas et al. report.

Endemic fluorosis for this study was defined as:
1) Living in the endemic fluorosis region since birth
2) having mottled tooth enamel, indicating dental fluorosis
3) consuming water with fluoride levels above 1.2 ppm
4) a urine fluoride level greater than 1.5 mg/l

The mean fluoride level in the drinking water, serum and urine was significantly higher in patients with fluorosis than in controls.

10:31AM - Fluoridation 101

Impure, untested and non-required fluoride chemicals are legislated into most U.S. water supplies, not to kill nasty microbes, but to medicate tap water drinkers who are assured water fluoridation is a safe and effective way to prevent tooth decay. But it is neither.

Water fluoridation is an old-fashioned concept. It is dentistry's continued goal for every American's faucet to dispense 1 milligram fluoride via approximately one quart of water. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tells us that 2/3 of Americans receive fluoridated tap water. Virtually 100% eat and drink a fluoridated food supply.

Fluoridation, shockingly, is not supported by valid science.

Dentists mistakenly believed swallowed fluoride created decay resistant teeth by becoming part of children's developing enamel; but they were wrong. Fluoride's beneficial effects, if any, are topical according to the CDC and the American Dental Association.

Public health officials predicted fluoride would eradicate tooth decay like vaccines prevent disease; but they were wrong about that, too. They said fluoride was a necessary nutrient and, like vitamin C prevents scurvy, fluoride would prevent tooth decay - wrong again.

The US Surgeon General reports tooth decay is at epidemic proportions among our poor and minority populations, many of whom live in fluoridated communities . While, tooth decay is increasing in US children , the United Kingdom reports an 11% cavity decline in a recent survey and a 15% decline in a previous survey. The UK is only 10% fluoridated and provides low-fluoride children's toothpaste. Only high-dose fluoride toothpaste is available in the U.S. - twice the dosage of the UK's children's fluoridated toothpates.

In fact, non-water-fluoridated Finland, Sweden and Holland cut tooth decay rates by 92%, 82% and 72% respectively over the past 20 years. While in the super-fluoride saturated U.S., public health dentists only managed to cut rates by 50% over the same period (since 1984).

Fluoride supplements are prescribed to children from communities that won't or can't fluoridate their water supply. With no or very poor scientific support, dentists say swallowing l milligram fluoride daily reduces tooth decay without fluoride's adverse effects such as dental fluorosis but they are even wrong about that.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) never approved fluoride ingestion. They were "grandfathered" in before the FDA drug testing laws were enacted. New research shows that children who consume fluoride tablets are more at risk for dental fluorosis. That's why routine fluoride supplementation is no longer recommended by the Canadian Dental Association, the Western Australian Health Authority's Dental Section and the German Scientific Dental Association. And, because of health concerns, Belgium banned the sale of fluoride supplements to prevent tooth decay.

Dental Fluorosis is the only outward sign of fluoride's toxicity to the rest of the body.

Astonishingly, research now shows swallowing fluoride is virtually useless and has unnecessarily exposed millions of Americans to fluoride's adverse side effects such as bone disease and dental fluorosis - white spotted, yellow or brown stained and sometimes pitted and crumbly teeth - which has, not so surprisingly, increased dramatically in American children.(above picture is moderate dental fluorosis).

The Acadeny of General Dentistry and many researchers recommends non-fluoridated water be used to prepare infant formula and foods, to avoid dental fluorosis.

Lack of fluoride does not cause tooth decay. Poor diet does. Fluoride cannot fix a poor diet. But fluoride can and does ruin children's teeth.

Some studies show that cavity levels decline after water fluoridation stops. Ironically, African Americans have the most tooth decay and the most dental fluorosis.

There's evidence that fluoride actually causes tooth decay at levels slightly over "optimal."

In fact, dental fluorosis has gotten so bad that some dental experts, such as Dr. Hardy Limeback, say that it costs more to repair teeth damaged by fluoride than would have been saved if water fluoridation actually reduced tooth decay.

In 2004, one dentist charged $18,000 to cover a 16-year-olds white-laced fluoride-damaged teeth with veneers and caps.

HOW WE GOT INTO THIS MESS

At the turn of the last century, many residents of the Southwest US had unusually ugly teeth. They called it "Colorado Brown Stain." Dental researchers sought to discover the source of this disfiguring tooth malformation. The culprit was high levels of fluoride in the water. We've been told for years that these ugly teeth resisted decay but a recently discovered book (April 2004)via the internet gives conflicting details.

Only 28.5% of 12- to 14-year-olds were cavity-free in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with 2.6 ppm naturally fluoridated water, 75% had fluorosis, according to a 1948 study ("Fluorine in Drinking Water Its Effect on Dental Caries," by Francis A. Arnold).

Also, Hereford, Texas, was touted as the "town without a toothache" because high levels of natural water fluoride discolored the townfolk's teeth but, we were told, they didn't have any or few cavities. However, 12 to 14-year-olds living in Hereford, Texas, where the water was naturally fluoridated at 3.1 ppm, 100% had dental fluorosis; but only 38% were caries free.

The towns listed with fluoride levels advocated into today's water supplies have even more dismal cavity rates.

These statistics are not impressive.

But maybe they were better than other cities without fluoride or calcium, dentists and/or sound nutrition.

But that didn't stop well-meaning but misguided dentists (who probably didn't investigate the studies as they still don't do today)to assume the fluoride also caused the discolored teeth allegedly to resist decay. However, what they overlooked is significant. The water supply was also very high in calcium and magnesium, essential nutrients we now know makes teeth strong.

Also the population studied in Colorado Springs was healthy and wealthy, which drew dentists from the East striving to make their own fortune. At the same time, poor residents of Appalachia in the East were losing teeth to decay without any dentist around to treat them.

In another highly unbelievable move, the dentists convinced public health people to experiment with this new fluoride "discovery." They hypothesized that, if natural fluoride (calcium fluoride) in drinking water makes teeth resist decay, let's totally ingnore calcium (and the gereral health of people with great teeth), and see if adding artificial fluoride to a town's water makes any difference.

So they used all the people in a few cities like Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Newburgh, New York, as their guinea pigs. In Newburgh, they added sodium fluoride into the water supply in 1945 and left Kingston unfluoridated to act as the control.

Of course researchers declared fluoridation a success after only five years, even though the teeth of the children born into the experiment hadnt even erupted yet. They said fluoride was safe because they examined school children who weren't sick two weeks before the examination date - virtually eliminating the very children who may have been made ill by the fluoride. Adults were never examined for ill effects.

Ten years later, the State University of New York found that children in fluoridated Newburgh had more cortical bone defects and higher rates of hemoglob anemia. Kingston never fluoridated. Recent studies show tooth decay and dental fluorosis is higher in fluoridated Newburgh.

And what's even more perverse is that the chemical used to fluoridate your drinking water is an industrial waste product that, along with fluoride, carries lead, arsenic, and other contaminants to a faucet near you.

The silicofluorides have never been safety tested in animals or humans. With the American children as guinea pigs, researchers find that silicofluorides increase children's lead absorption and higher blood lead levels are linked to more tooth decay. And the U.S. National Toxicology Program is just beginning to study silicofluorides for human ingestion some 50 plus years after it's been dumped into most Americans drinking water.

Other studies link fluoride to bone fractures, lowered IQ, thyroid disfunction and more.

Fluoridation has provided a lucrative sector for researchers to apply for federal grants to study the after effects of the crazy decision to put fluoride into humans' water supply and then see what happens.

US children are overdosed with fluoride whether rich or poor, healthy or malnourished from various sources. You would think dentists would heed the advice reported in their dental journals - to cut back on fluoride use. But instead dentists are lobbying legislators all over the US to fluoridate more water supplies - even when the people have voted against it. But educated individuals are fighting back. In the past two elections, fluoridation failed miserably in the polls.

Meanwhile, the American Dental Association reported to the press on June 16, 2000 that they have a new cavity fighting tool - calcium. January 2006, researchers tout Cavistat, a calcium containing nutrient substance that reduces cavities better than fluoride and without fluoride.

And, instead of putting themselves out of business as they once predicted, today’s dentists make much more money than physicians while working less days and less hours. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Write your legislators. Tell them you want fluoridation stopped on the local, state and federal levels. Find out who represents you here
